Here’s what keeps me up at night: It’s not just that we’re polarized.

Tribal thinking reinforcement
Tribal thinking reinforcement

It’s that polarization REINFORCES ITSELF.

We’re caught in eight overlapping feedback loops, and they’re all accelerating. Each one makes the others worse. The system is eating itself.

Let me show you the machine.

Understanding Feedback Loops

First, quick science: A feedback loop is when the output of a system feeds back into the input, creating amplification.

Simple example: Microphone near a speaker creates that ear-splitting screech. Sound from speaker → Mic picks it up → Speaker plays it louder → Mic picks up the louder sound → SCREECH

That’s a feedback loop.

Now imagine EIGHT of those, all screeching at once, all making each other louder.

That’s where we are.

Loop 1: The Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral

How it works:

User clicks political content
    ↓
Algorithm learns user's preferences
    ↓
Recommends more extreme version
    ↓
User engages (anger = engagement)
    ↓
Algorithm: "User wants MORE extreme"
    ↓
Recommends even more extreme
    ↓
User radicalized → Creates/shares extreme content
    ↓
Algorithm amplifies to similar users
    ↓
MORE USERS RADICALIZED
    ↓
Loop accelerates

Real example: You watch one video about immigration concerns. Within weeks, YouTube is recommending content about “invasion” and “replacement.” Not because you’re racist. Because extreme = engaging, and the algorithm optimized.

Amplification rate: Exponential. Each cycle escalates.

Time to radicalization: Weeks to months.

Why it’s hard to break: Happens individually to millions of people, feels like personal discovery, algorithm has no incentive to stop.

Loop 2: The Outrage Profit Cycle

How it works:

Media publishes outrage content
    ↓
High engagement (clicks, shares, rage-comments)
    ↓
Ad revenue increases
    ↓
Media sees: Outrage = Money
    ↓
Produces MORE outrage content
    ↓
Competitors must match or lose market share
    ↓
Race to the bottom
    ↓
Audience desensitized
    ↓
Need MORE EXTREME content for same effect
    ↓
Loop escalates

Real example: Cable news in 2008: “Here are the policy differences between candidates.” Cable news in 2024: “The other side wants to DESTROY AMERICA” (every single night).

Amplification rate: Competitive (Red Queen race – have to run faster just to stay in place).

Economic incentive: Direct and powerful.

Why it’s hard to break: Every outlet that refuses to engage in outrage-bait loses audience to those who do. Market forces select for the worst behavior.

Loop 3: The Narcissistic Injury Spiral

How it works:

Group feels threatened (real or imagined)
    ↓
Narcissistic defenses activate
    ↓
Dehumanize/attack out-group
    ↓
Out-group feels threatened
    ↓
THEIR narcissistic defenses activate
    ↓
They dehumanize/attack back
    ↓
Confirms original threat perception
    ↓
Escalate aggression
    ↓
Other group escalates
    ↓
Loop intensifies

Real example:
– Left: “They’re literally fascists”
– Right: “See? They call us fascists. They hate us. We need to fight back.”
– Left: “See? They’re getting more extreme. We were right.”
– Repeat forever, getting worse.

Amplification rate: Reactive violence begets more violence.

Psychological mechanism: Trauma + threat response → Defensive aggression.

Why it’s hard to break: Both sides are correct that the other is becoming more extreme. The loop itself creates the reality it fears.

Loop 4: The Epistemic Closure Loop

How it works:

In-group shares "evidence" of out-group evil
    ↓
Members encounter ONLY confirming info
    ↓
Belief strengthens
    ↓
Seek more confirming info (feels good)
    ↓
Algorithm feeds confirming info (engagement optimization)
    ↓
Contradictory info avoided/dismissed as propaganda
    ↓
Worldview becomes unfalsifiable
    ↓
Out-group claims automatically rejected
    ↓
Epistemic bubble becomes impermeable
    ↓
Loop locks in

Real example: Someone in a left-wing bubble genuinely cannot understand how anyone could vote Republican. Not “disagrees with” – literally cannot model the psychology. And vice versa.

Amplification rate: Reinforcing. Belief becomes more rigid over time.

Cognitive mechanism: Confirmation bias + motivated reasoning + algorithmic amplification.

Why it’s hard to break: Any contradictory information is perceived as enemy propaganda. The loop has its own immune system.

Loop 5: The Purity Spiral

How it works:

Activist makes strong statement
    ↓
Another activist makes STRONGER statement (status competition)
    ↓
First must match or seem moderate (=traitor)
    ↓
Arms race of ideological purity
    ↓
Moderates purged as insufficiently pure
    ↓
Overton window shifts extreme
    ↓
Yesterday's extremists are today's moderates
    ↓
New baseline established
    ↓
Someone goes further
    ↓
Loop ratchets more extreme

Real example (left): 2010: “Marriage equality.” 2015: “Trans rights.” 2020: “Defund police.” 2024: “Questioning any of this is violence.”

Real example (right): 2010: “Lower taxes.” 2015: “Build the wall.” 2020: “Stop the steal.” 2024: “Questioning election is treason.”

Amplification rate: Ratcheting. Only moves one direction (more extreme).

Social mechanism: Status is gained by being “most committed” to the cause.

Why it’s hard to break: Anyone who says “maybe we’re going too far” gets expelled, which proves to remaining members that purity enforcement works.

Loop 6: The Institutional Distrust Cascade

How it works:

Institution fails/disappoints (media, government, science)
    ↓
Public trust decreases
    ↓
Bad actors exploit distrust (conspiracy theories)
    ↓
Institution tries to correct → Seen as cover-up
    ↓
Trust decreases FURTHER
    ↓
Institution loses authority
    ↓
Alternative "authorities" fill vacuum (grifters)
    ↓
Alternative authorities spread MORE distrust
    ↓
Institutional collapse
    ↓
Loop degrades social fabric

Real example:
– Media makes mistakes → Trust falls → People turn to alternative media → Alternative media has no standards → Misinformation spreads → Mainstream media tries to fact-check → “See? They’re trying to silence the truth!” → Trust falls further.

Amplification rate: Cascading. Each failure feeds on previous failures.

Societal risk: Complete institutional collapse → Authoritarianism fills the vacuum.

Why it’s hard to break: Trust is built slowly, destroyed quickly. Takes decades to build, days to lose.

Loop 7: The Martyrdom-Recruitment Cycle

How it works:

Extremist group acts provocatively
    ↓
Authorities/opponents respond with force
    ↓
Group frames response as persecution
    ↓
"We're being oppressed!" narrative
    ↓
Martyrdom story attracts new recruits
    ↓
Group grows + radicalizes
    ↓
More provocative actions
    ↓
Harsher response
    ↓
Better martyrdom story
    ↓
More recruitment
    ↓
Loop expands movement

Real example: Extremist protests → Police response → “See? They’re trying to silence us!” → More people join (“If they’re trying to stop them, they must be a threat to power”) → Bigger protests → Stronger response → Better recruitment tool.

Amplification rate: Growth (feeds recruitment directly).

Strategic element: Often intentional. Provocateurs WANT overreaction.

Why it’s hard to break: Measured response looks weak to your side, any response looks like persecution to their side.

Loop 8: The Tribalization-Fragmentation Loop

How it works:

Society polarizes around issue
    ↓
People sort into tribes based on position
    ↓
Tribes develop distinct cultures, languages, "facts"
    ↓
Cross-tribe communication becomes harder
    ↓
Misunderstanding increases → Conflict increases
    ↓
People retreat deeper into tribes for safety
    ↓
Tribes become more insular + extreme
    ↓
Society fragments into hostile camps
    ↓
Parallel realities emerge
    ↓
No shared ground remains
    ↓
Loop tears social fabric

Real example: Left and right now:
– Read different news sources
– Use different language
– Believe different facts
– Live in different geographic areas
– Have different moral foundations
– See each other as alien

We’re becoming two nations sharing geography.

Amplification rate: Fragmenting. Social fabric tears.

Long-term risk: Civil conflict. Societal collapse.

Why it’s hard to break: Requires rebuilding common ground that no longer exists.

The Meta-Problem: They All Reinforce Each Other

Here’s where it gets really dark:

These aren’t eight separate problems. They’re eight interconnected systems, each making the others worse.

Example cascade:

Algorithmic radicalization (Loop 1) → Feeds outrage media (Loop 2) → Creates narcissistic injury (Loop 3) → Drives epistemic closure (Loop 4) → Enables purity spirals (Loop 5) → Destroys institutional trust (Loop 6) → Creates martyrdom narratives (Loop 7) → Accelerates tribalization (Loop 8) → Which feeds back into algorithmic radicalization.

It’s a system. And systems are MUCH harder to change than individual problems.

Why Everything We’ve Tried Has Failed

Now you can see why:

Fact-checking tries to break Loop 4 (epistemic closure), but Loops 2, 3, and 6 make people distrust fact-checkers.

Content moderation tries to break Loop 1 (algorithmic amplification), but Loops 5 and 7 turn bans into martyrdom and recruitment.

Media literacy tries to break Loop 4, but Loop 2 ensures that media optimizing for outrage wins the engagement war.

Bridge-building dialogues try to break Loop 8 (tribalization), but Loops 3 and 5 make participants afraid of being seen as traitors.

You can’t fix a systemic problem with a single-point intervention.

The Trajectory

If these loops continue unchecked, here’s where we’re headed:

Year 1-2 (now): Rising polarization, declining trust, increasing political violence, democratic dysfunction.

Year 3-5: Institutional collapse, reality fragmentation, potential civil conflict, economic damage from inability to cooperate.

Year 5-10: Either:
– Society rebuilds with authoritarian “solution” (strongman promises order)
– OR society fragments completely (regional breakup, sustained low-level conflict)
– OR (slim chance) we coordinate to break the loops

We’re currently on track for option 1 or 2.

But Here’s The Thing About Feedback Loops

They can be reversed.

If you can identify the mechanisms, you can disrupt them. And if you disrupt enough of them simultaneously, you can shift the entire system to a new equilibrium.

A GOOD equilibrium.

That’s what the rest of this series is about.

But first you had to see the machine.

Now you have.

Next in this series: “Why Fact-Checking Failed (And What That Tells Us)” – We’ve tried to fix this before. Everything failed. Understanding why is crucial to understanding what would actually work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the eight feedback loops destroying society?

The eight feedback loops include the Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral, Outrage Profit Cycle, and Narcissistic Injury Spiral, among others. Each loop amplifies polarization and reinforces itself, creating a cycle that accelerates societal division and conflict.

How does the Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral work?

The Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral occurs when a user’s engagement with political content leads algorithms to recommend increasingly extreme materials. This process can rapidly radicalize users, as they are exposed to more provocative content that elicits anger and engagement.

What is the Outrage Profit Cycle in media?

The Outrage Profit Cycle describes how media outlets prioritize outrage-inducing content to drive engagement and increase ad revenue. This competitive environment leads to a race among media companies to produce even more extreme content, further desensitizing audiences.

How does narcissism contribute to societal conflict?

Narcissism contributes to societal conflict through the Narcissistic Injury Spiral, where groups feel threatened and engage in dehumanizing attacks against each other. This mutual escalation of aggression intensifies divisions and reinforces the perception of threat on both sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main mechanism driving the Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral? +

The Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral operates by analyzing user engagement with political content, leading algorithms to recommend more extreme versions of that content, which further radicalizes users and creates a cycle of amplification.

How does the Outrage Profit Cycle affect media content? +

The Outrage Profit Cycle compels media outlets to produce increasingly outrageous content to maintain engagement and ad revenue, resulting in a competitive race where outlets that do not engage in outrage-baiting lose audience share.

What is the role of narcissistic defenses in the Narcissistic Injury Spiral? +

In the Narcissistic Injury Spiral, when a group feels threatened, their narcissistic defenses activate, prompting them to dehumanize and attack the out-group, which in turn feels threatened and reacts similarly, escalating the conflict.

Why is it challenging to break the feedback loops described in the article? +

Each feedback loop is difficult to break because they are individually experienced by millions of people, making the radicalization feel like personal discovery, and the economic incentives for media to produce outrage content create a system that rewards negative behavior.

What is the amplification rate of the Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral? +

The amplification rate of the Algorithmic Radicalization Spiral is exponential, as each cycle of radicalization intensifies quickly, leading to users becoming radicalized within weeks to months.
